What is a Corgi mixed with a Pitbull?

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi Pitbull mix is known as a Corgi Pit.

History of the Breed

Some people argue that the first Corgi Pit was an accidental development that might have a little truth in it. It remains a mystery as to when the cross between the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and a Pitbull was made. However, it is thought that the Corgi Pit was designed intentionally somewhere during the 1990s when designer dogs increased in popularity.

Pitbull – Pitbulls (Pits) have a bad history that makes most people fear them. However, a well-trained pooch will make an excellent companion. Pitbulls originated from the UK and are descendants of the Old English Bulldogs (now extinct). Their purpose was to take part in bull baiting, a bloody sport. After getting to America in the 1800s, they left their past behind and were trained to be working dogs, guard dogs, and companions. It is important to note that there are several types of Pitbulls.

Generally, Pitbulls are stubborn but boast a sweet, friendly temperament that makes them good buddies and family dogs. They are smart, comical, loving, submissive, kind, brave, and are strong-willed. The AKC does not identify them as a breed but the United Kennel Club (UKC) does.

Male Pits stand around 18 to 21 inches in height with a weight of between 35 and 60 lbs. Females, on the other hand, are usually 17 to 20 inches tall and weigh 30 to 50 lbs. Common health problems in Pits include hip dysplasia, kneecap dislocation, skin problems, congenital heart defects, and degenerative myelopathy. They boast a lifespan of 8 to 15 years.

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi – Their history dates back to 1107 AD where Flemish weavers were said to bring them along to Wales when they traveled to seek to reside there. The breed was originally bred to herd livestock but was eliminated when Welsh farmers started to raise sheep in fenced pastures.

Classified as small-to-medium-size dogs, Corgis are excellent adapters that can live in the city and countryside. They have tenacious, bold, outgoing, playful, and friendly but protective personalities. These characters make this breed a good family dog and companion, especially if you have kids and plan to add more. Ha-ha! The Pembroke Welsh Corgi was recognized by the AKC as a breed in 1934.

On average, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi stands 14 to 17 inches tall with a withers height of 10 to 12 inches, and a body length of 22 to 26 inches. A full-size Corgi will weigh between 23 and 28 lbs. Some serious health problems in Corgis include hip dysplasia, intervertebral disc disease, epilepsy, and degenerative myelopathy. They have a life expectancy of approx. 11 to 13 years.

Appearance

The Welsh Corgi Pitbull mix can differ significantly in appearance which makes it hard to predict what they may look like exactly. However, the mix-breed will probably be very athletic with a longer snout. The Corgi Pit will be strongly-built as its Pitbull parent with a long muzzle like that of the Corgi parent.

Corgis are medium-to-large size pooches that stand approx. 17 to 19 inches in height with a Pitbull’s ears that are floppy. This mixed breed will have a weight of between 30 and 50 lbs. They will have a short and rather dense coat that is likely water and dirt-repellent. This makes caring for your doggie easy. However, they can inherit the Corgi parent’s long, double coat.

The coat comes in a range of colors.

Temperament

The Corgi Pitbull mix will be affectionate like both its parents with a playful nature that makes them great family dogs. Corgi Pits love affection so they will love being around you and your fam and they can be downright silly as well. If you are looking for protectiveness, this mixed breed makes an exceptional guard dog.

What’s astonishing is how well the Corgi Pit gets along with other pets, unlike other Pitbull mixes. You will never hear complaints from your neighbors since the cross is not a barker, but your canine buddy has a high pet drive. So, they will be prompted by smaller creatures moving about in the house.

Remember these dogs can be large so a small apartment or condo won’t cut it.

Nutrition

Your new Corgi Pit will thrive tremendously on a high-quality diet that is formulated based on the level of activity and age. They should consume approx. 3 cups a day but make sure the food is given in intervals and in small intervals during specific times. We have reviews of the best dog food for Corgis here.

It is worth mentioning that the Corgi Pitbull mix loves eating just like both parents. This makes them prone to obesity which is a health risk factor. If you are unsure of what and how much should be included in your canine friend’s diet, consult your vet.

Having said that, these pooches love treats, especially when you are training them. Watch out for how much you feed them.

Training & Exercise

The Corgi Pit is highly intelligent and physically strong so training them will be easy. However, they tend to have a stubborn streak which can only be dealt with if trained from puppyhood. If you can avoid treats and substitute them with positive reinforcement plus verbal praise, it is better and healthier.

As mentioned above, Corgi Pits are extremely energetic pooches which means they need plenty of exercises to burn off excess energy. We recommend 2 walks daily or approx. 45 minutes of daily exercise to keep fit and healthy. Make sure they play a couple of times daily.

Please never allow your Corgi Pit to stay alone for long periods as they can turn out to be destructive when bored or stressed from separation anxiety.

Health Issues

The Corgi Pitbull mix is healthy like any hybrid as compared to their parent purebreds. They can, however, inherit some health problems that include hip dysplasia, epilepsy, bloat, degenerative myelopathy, and intervertebral disc disease.

Life Expectancy

A healthy Pitbull Corgi mix will have a lifespan of approx. 12 to 14 years.

Grooming Needs

Since Corgi Pits are a non-hypoallergenic breed, they are expected to shed moderately due to they are double-coated. They shed twice frequently year-round which means they will need brushing every day. During normal days, they will do well when brushed at least once or twice a week.

Avoid frequent baths and give them when needed as Corgi Pit pups can develop skin sensitivity to conditioning products and shampoo. Trim their nails regularly to prevent them from curling up and brush their teeth often for optimal dental health.

Cost and Maintenance

Based on where the breeder is located and their reputation, you should expect to pay anywhere from $1,000 and $1,500 for a Corgi Pitbull mix pup. Remember they are a rare cross so you may sweat a little before laying your hands on one.

Corgi Pits are not high-maintenance dogs, unlike other Pitbull mixes.

Where to Adopt

If you are looking for a Corgi Pitbull mix for adoption, you can start with your local rescues and shelters. Even if they do not have this hybrid, they might guide you on how to get a healthy one. They are better equipped for this.
