Dogs are awesome. They’re loyal, they make great friends and they can be really funny too. But like all living creatures, they need to eat to survive (and thrive). So what’s the best way for you to feed your dog?
There are three main types of dog food:
- dry kibble,
- wet canned food or
- raw meaty bones.
Dry Kibble Diet
If you want an easy solution that takes care of all his nutritional needs then go with a commercial dry kibble diet (most people nowadays). It has everything he needs in it and is nutritionally balanced for any size or breed of dog. The downside is that it doesn’t taste very good so some dogs won’t eat it unless you mix in something tasty like leftover cooked chicken.
Wet Canned Dog Food
If you can get your dog to eat it, wet canned food is a good choice and similar nutritionally to dry kibble. The trick is getting him to eat enough of it. You may have to mix in something tasty like leftover cooked chicken for this option too. Another problem with wet canned food is that it spoils quickly so it’s not an ideal choice if you’re out at work all day.
Raw Meaty Bones
Another food option that you can try is raw meaty bones, better known as BARF. It includes uncooked meats and vegetables for most of his diet plus some supplements like bone meal, calcium and minerals. On the plus side, there’s no need to cook the food or mix it with anything else and dogs tend to love it. The downside is that you have to be very careful about what types of meaty bones you feed him so as not to cause any digestive upset.
How much dry kibble dog food should i feed my dog?
There are a few things to keep in mind when you’re deciding how much dog food your dog should eat. Your dog needs enough to be full and satisfied at the end of each meal and his weight and age play an important role. The amount also depends on what type of food you give him so it’s useful to know about each of them.
For dry dog food, you should feed him around 1 to 2 cups of kibble per day for every 30 lbs he weighs. If he’s still a growing puppy then his daily intake can be increased by up to 50%.
how much wet canned dog food should i feed my dog?
If you want to give him wet canned food, feed him around 2 to 4 cups of food per day for every 30 lbs he weighs. Like dry food, you can also increase his intake if he’s still a growing puppy to approximately 2 cups per 15 lbs he weighs.
how much raw meaty bones should i feed my dog?
For raw meaty bones, give him roughly 1 bone per 20 lbs that he weighs, or about 1/2 cup of bone meal per 20 lbs he weighs.
If you want to learn more about how much dog food your dog should eat, talk to his veterinarian. They’ll be able to give you advice based on his breed, age and current health status plus any special diets or nutritional needs.
