Blue Buffalo vs Science Diet 2022

Both Blue Buffalo and Science Diet are excellent brands with comparable price points which explain why they fall under the same category. They manufacture premium pet foods that are safe for your pets but that does not mean they are similar. So, who is better in the face-off?

Blue Buffalo vs Science Diet Companies

Hill’s Pet Nutrition, the marketer of Science Diet, entered the pet food market in the 1930s. The company’s story is quite interesting! A dog owner requested a prominent vet to make dog food that would help his dog diagnosed with kidney failure. They did so successfully and that was the dawn of the brand’s journey which you popularly recognize today.

On the other hand, Blue Buffalo was founded in 2003 by Bill Bishop who later sold it to General Mills in 2018. It is headquartered in Wilton, Connecticut, USA.

Blue Buffalo vs Science Diet Ingredients

The major difference between Blue Buffalo and Science Diet is in the ingredients. While Blue uses natural ingredients without by-products, Hill’s foods are based on science (not always natural). And while Hill’s uses real meat as the first ingredient, it is not guaranteed as with Blue, plus they use meat by-products which are controversial ingredients. Unlike Blue, all Hill’s diets are grain-inclusive and are transparent with their clients.

Overall, both brands are okay, but it depends on what you are looking for. If you prefer all grain-inclusive formulas, Hill’s is a go. If you need many options, Blue is ideal.

Blue Buffalo vs Taste of the Wild

Both Blue Buffalo and Taste of the Wild are on the list of the leading natural pet foods in the market today. They offer high-quality food options that you can feel safe when feeding your cat or dog. So, what makes one better than the other?

Taste of the Wild was founded recently in 2007 and is made by Diamond Pet Foods, Inc., which is owned by Schell and Kampeter, Inc. Like Blue Buffalo before purchase, it is family-run and was started to meet the plea for natural pet foods, with focus on grain-free and grained options. It offers both dry and wet foods for different life stages with diets that mimic instinctive pet diets.

When it comes to nutritional value, Taste of the Wild uses hormone-free and antibiotics-free lean meats that do not contain toxic preservatives like Ethoxyquin. When it comes to pricing, the brand offers quality foods at a very competitive price by keeping its pricing structure simple. Taste of the Wild contains 1.5%, 5%, and 0.9% more protein content in a dry dog, wet dog, and dry cat foods than Blue Buffalo which exceeds it with 1.2% more protein in wet cat foods.

10 Chicken-Free Dog Food 2022

Are you looking for the best chicken-free dog food in the market for your canine companion? I am willing to lend a hand with this comprehensive and informative review. Chicken is a superb source of animal-based protein that is packed with healthy nutrients your pooch needs to thrive. Some of these nutrients include zinc to vitamin B12, choline, iron, and copper. It also contains low-fat content which is good for dogs with health conditions such as pancreatitis and sensitive tummies. That, plus being fairly easy on the pocket, makes it an ingredient in many dog diets.

On the other hand, chicken is known to be a common food allergen culprit for doggies, which is why most dog parents might consider diets without chicken. And if you are searching for these dog foods, it means you might have seen symptoms of chicken allergy in your canine. According to the 2018 Banfield Pet Hospital’s State of Pet Health Report, at least 0.2% of dogs have food allergies. This May 29 report said that dogs with food-related allergies are more susceptible to skin infections. Therefore, the occurrence of pyoderma is 6x more than in non-food-allergic dogs.

So, avoiding dog foods or treats that contain chicken as an ingredient is the most appropriate way to treat chicken allergy in your dog. There are many other protein sources with similar or high nutritional value to chicken. Today, I have prepared a list of the best chicken-free dog foods in the market, but before that…

What meat is dogs least allergic to?

From salmon to duck, rabbit, venison, buffalo, mackerel, kangaroo, and pork, these are excellent alternatives to chicken with premium protein for your dog. Lamb is also a good option for your dog that will not eat chicken-inclusive foods and treats. You can consider novel proteins or those that your Fido has not eaten before. These ingredients will help abate allergy symptoms while making your dog’s life easier, happier, and healthier.

Mostly, dogs with food allergies such as chicken protein exhibit skin problems where it becomes dry with excessive itching and scratching, chronic ear infections, and hot spots. As you can see, these are tricky symptoms for you to note from home. That is why seeing a vet is recommended.

Review of the 10 best chicken free dog foods

Premium chicken-free dog food should primarily contain animal-based protein with healthy fats, vital nutrients, and carbs that are easy to digest. Where to buy chicken-free dog food

Are you looking for chicken-free dog food in Australia, Canada, the UK among other regions? You can purchase them via this link on Amazon here or Chewy. Most of these dog foods are also available in the brick-and-mortar stores in your area or other online stores like Walmart, Petco among others.

How to make chicken free dog food

Some dog parents are opting for homemade diets for their pooches with chicken allergies rather than feeding them commercial chicken-free kibbles and canned foods. According to this article by American Kennel Club (AKC), cooking for your canine friend comes with loads of benefits including bond-building, pleasing picky eaters, and aids in diet management. However, home dog diets can be difficult. The most common mistakes we make when doing so, note the AKC, include using risky ingredients and not cooking balanced meals.

Here are some tips to follow when making chicken free dog foods at home:

  1. Prepare a balanced diet by including among other things vitamins and minerals
  2. Select your meats carefully to make sure it is fresh and fit for human consumption and that it provides the necessary amino acids for bodybuilding. It should not have more than 15% to 20% fat.
  3. Make sure that veggies constitute ¼ of the whole diet so you can feed him vitamins, fiber, and minerals. Good choices include zucchini, broccoli, squash, green beans, pumpkin, peas, carrots, beets, sweet potatoes, and cauliflower.

Please, avoid feeding your canine pal carbs such as wheat, corn, potatoes, and rice as their digestive system does not have the enzymes required to break down and digest carbs. In addition, they are known to be culprits that cause health problems like allergies, IBD, kidney disease, and obesity. These recipes are available online.

FAQs

Can a dog with a chicken allergy eat eggs?

Eggs are a different allergen from chicken which means that even your dog with chicken allergies can freely eat eggs and have no problems. Allergies develop with a time of feeding that specific ingredient, especially a long time. Besides, the allergen that triggers reactions when your dog eats chicken is not present in the eggs.

Low Fat Dog Food without Chicken 2022

Are you on the hunt for low-fat dog food without chicken? You have come to the right place as I wrote this article with your needs in mind. Chicken is one of the most commonly used sources of protein in many dog food brands out there. Other than being fairly cheap, chicken is nutrient-rich as it contains vitamin B12, iron, zand inc, and is also low in fat content. In addition, chicken is easy to digest, tasty, and a superb choice for weight loss and health issues like pancreatitis and IBD.

Despite having all these health benefits, which makes it a common ingredient in most dog foods, chicken has also become one of the most common food allergens in pooches. And talking about dog food allergies, they do not just occur, no! They result from your dog being exposed to this ingredient for a long. The most appropriate way to treat chicken allergies in dogs, for instance, is through the diet elimination method or feeding dog food without chicken in it. Add that to low fat and you will have the healthiest and happiest dog ever.

Today, I will be looking at dog foods without chicken and low in fat. I spent more than 72 hours searching for low-fat dog foods and separating those with chicken from those without. From beef to whitefish, salmon, duck, rabbit, buffalo, lamb, and kangaroo, these are all healthy alternatives to chicken protein. They are also low in fat and packed with essential nutrients that are ideal for your puppy, adult, and senior canine friend whether they are small, medium, or large breeds.

But before that…

Why low fat?

Low-fat dog foods are remarkable diet options if you want to help your canine companion to maintain a healthy weight. In addition, it is the most recommended diet for pooches with some health conditions such as pancreatitis, sensitive tums, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). That is because a diet that is low in fat content is easier for your canine to digest and absorb all nutrients.

Your dogs need fat to thrive as it provides the energy that helps them remain active and bouncy. However, fat can be harmful to your dog’s health, especially when fed in high amounts, whether as food or treats. As stated by the Institute of Pet Obesity Prevention, 55.8% of pooches in the US are considered obese. Feeding your dog food with high-fat content is one of the culprits of weight gain or obesity cases, which, in turn, reduces your dog’s lifespan significantly.

Obesity in dogs is known to cause kidney disease, heart disease, and hypertension, or high blood pressure. But do not worry, thanks to low-fat dog foods and sufficient daily exercise to help reduce weight, your dog can remain healthy and live longer. So, which are these foods that are low in fat and with no chicken?

Best Wsava Dog Food 2022

Are you looking for the best Wsava dog food in the market? You have come to the right place. A group of veterinary professionals created the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) in 1961. Before that year, the organization was called the International Association of Small Animal Specialists (IASAS). Currently, the company has over 200k members who are a part of 113 member organizations.

WSAVA is built on a great reputation and many vet experts in the Western world are its great supporters. However, until very recently, the group was relatively unknown among pet owners as well as technicians and veterinarians. WSAVA has become the glare of publicity following the current pet food formulation controversies and the ingredients used.

What is Wsava dog food?

WSAVA dog food refers to the brand of dog foods that are recommended by the organization as fit and safe for your pooch. The list consists of dog foods that meet the specific nutritional values that are set by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). In addition, these dog foods use limited amounts of ingredients discouraged by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Read about the difference between WSAVA and AAFCO here.

WSAVA dog food Guidelines

The WSAVA, in 2011, printed a nutrition package called the recommendations on selecting pet foods which contain a list of questions that determines a brand’s dog food quality. It aims at helping pet owners and vets to feed their pooches the best diet customized to meet their specific dietary needs. In addition, these Wsava guidelines help verify how well you can trust a dog food brand with your dog’s health and well-being.

Check out these questions included in the guidelines here (2020) and also check out the 2021 updated guidelines here. We recommend you read these FAQs in detail to get a deeper insight into what Wsava uses to determine the best and safest food for your canine buddy.

Since the link between the inclusion of certain ingredients in dog foods and the increased risk of canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), the Wsava guidelines have increased in popularity and debate. On the one hand, some brands have also responded to the WSAVA guidelines which have sparked awareness and even have debates on their sites about the topic.

Other dog food brands, on the other hand, tend to oppose these guidelines and prefer to ignore them completely. I guess in time we will know who between the two parties has chosen the right path.

Are most dog food Wsava compliant?

As you would expect, many dog food brands are against the recommendations preferred by the Wsava which means that most do not comply with the set guidelines. Yet, most of them meet some of them, especially dog food quality control and nutritional analysis. You will find this info on the packaging of dog foods.

As stated by the group, however, dog food brands should hire licensed nutritionists with a Ph.D. in animal nutrition. That is what most of these brands are against, particularly they are working on a full-time basis. Now, add that to the scarce skills in the eligible pet nutritionists’ field and the requirement becomes a double challenge.

In addition, the Wsava guidelines require dog food brands to conduct far-reaching feeding trials before passing the diets fit for consumption. On the contrary, a large number of them do small-scale feeding trials which are not enough proof for safety during consumption. Also, I would not allow my pooch to be used for such testing and many dog owners will not either.

The brand offers a wide range of products with recipes for any dog breed and size you might own. If you need dog food that is made with your dog breed in mind, Royal Canin got you covered.

The Sporting recipe mentioned above is perfect for your super-active breed and includes chicken by-product meal as the first ingredient. Some of us would argue that by-product meals are adverse but the opinion is different for the brand fanatics. It contains 26% crude protein, 19% crude fat, 4.1% crude fiber, and 10% moisture with 413 kcal/cup caloric content. The recipe also includes wholesome grain ingredients that are nutrient-rich.

Eukanuba is a brand in the Mars, Incorporated Worldwide line of products that are reputable in the pet food industry. Unlike the first three dog food brands, however, Eukanuba is not as large but is well-known and available in many stores, including online ones. If you need a recipe specifically designed for your pooch or a generic one, Eukanuba got you covered.

The brand’s puppy and large breed dog recipes are the most popular ones and you can see one of our favorites above. The premium sport formula is super-nutritious with chicken as the first ingredient which is animal-based protein making it a superb pick for your pooch. It contains 28% crude protein, 18% crude fat, 4% crude fiber, and 10% moisture with 387.94 kcal/cup caloric content.

We love the second ingredient as well, a chicken by-product that increases the protein content in the diet. Other favorite ingredients include brewer’s rice and more.

Iams Proactive Health High Protein Chicken & Turkey Adult Dry Dog Food

Iams is one of the food brands that many dog owners would not think of when considering diets that meet the Wsava guidelines. Since its founding in 1946 in Daytona, Ohio, the brand has built a good reputation in the pet food industry. What makes the brand even more popular is the accessibility even in grocery stores and some online stores as well, especially Walmart.

The proactive health recipe above is one of our most preferred in Purina’s line of Pro diets. With real chicken and chicken by-product meals as the first and second ingredients, the diet has high animal-based protein content. It contains 30% crude protein, 18% crude fat, 5% crude fiber, and 9% moisture with 416 kcal/cup caloric content.

We love the inclusion of healthy grains such as corn and sorghum as well as brewer’s yeast which is nutritious and healthy for your pooch.

Wsava dog food DCM

A discovery has linked the use of certain legumes such as chickpeas, peas, and lentils to canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), especially when used as the main ingredient. Wsava dog food exempts such ingredients from their recipes based on the argument that they are safe for our dogs. As stated by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) there are approx. 77 million dogs in the US. As of 30 April 2019, the FDA has received info about 560 dogs diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy suspected to be associated with diet.

FAQs

Is Orijen Wsava approved

Like most brands, Orijen does not comply with all the Wsava guidelines regarding dog food quality which is why it fails to appear on the approved list. Overall, however, most of their recipes are made using premium, tasty ingredients, and they are rich in protein, primarily from meat which is why they are among the few vet-recommended brands. Orijen has been in the pet food industry since its founding in 1985 by Reinhard Muhlenfeld.

The Best Dog Food with Grains 2022

BEST DOG FOODS WITH GRAINS

The best dog food with grains is not a difficult thing to find. You may have heard that dogs are carnivores, which means they should only eat meat-based foods. But the truth is that dogs can benefit from eating some carbohydrates and fats just as much as humans can.

There are many benefits to feeding your pup a grain-heavy diet: it’s easier on their stomachs than other kinds of food, it helps support healthy skin and coat, and it provides energy for activities like running or playing fetch in the yard.

Factors to consider when picking the best dog food with grains;

1. The quality of the grain – if it has chemicals, pesticides, preservatives, etc., then your furry friend isn’t getting much benefit from that food. Organic or whole grains are best.

2. Fiber content in the grains – this impacts how quickly the carbohydrates are digested and turned into energy for your dog. The more fiber, the better.

3. Meat content – this is self-explanatory. You want to look for meat as the first ingredient on the label; although it won’t be listed if it’s inside of a sauce or frozen, like in some wet foods (i.e., “chicken and beef broth”). The lower the meat content, the more fillers your pup is getting instead of nutritious food.

4. Grains should be well cooked and easy to digest – if they come in big clumps and feel gummy when you chew them, then they’re not fully cooked and will create a bad environment for your dog’s gut.

If you own a dog, you should know that dog foods with grains are a healthy choice, especially with this documented evidence linking grain-free diets to heart diseases in dogs. When choosing the best dog foods with grains, as I advise my friends, just make sure is that the brand you choose is using high-quality grains, not processed (or what they label as refined grains).

According to Leslie Brooks of Betterpet, ‘Most dogs do not have any problems digesting or tolerating grains and need adequate carbohydrates to be healthy. Grains are not inherently bad.

So which one is better: Grain-Free or Grain-Inclusive Diets?

There are many benefits to feeding your pup a grain-heavy diet: it’s easier on their stomachs than other kinds of food, it helps support healthy skin and coat, and it provides energy for activities like running or playing fetch in the yard.   Grain-based foods are also more affordable.

However, some people don’t like the idea of feeding their pet products that contain high amounts of carbohydrates (like corn or wheat).

The truth is that dogs can benefit from eating some carbohydrates and fats just as much as humans can. It’s also important to note that grains do not make up a large part of a dog’s natural diet; in the wild, they primarily eat meat.

Veterinarian Jean Dodds states that a small number of dogs do not digest grains well and therefore should be fed a grain-free diet. If your dog is one of these exceptions to the rule, then you might want to consider feeding them diets with ingredients like chicken, beef, lamb or venison.

Some dogs can also be allergic to certain grains, like wheat and corn. If you suspect your pup might have a grain allergy, talk to your vet or do some research on the symptoms; it’s always better to be safe rather than sorry when it comes to our pets’ health.

The bottom line is that the best dog food with grains will depend on your dog’s unique needs. However, you can never go wrong feeding a diet that contains quality ingredients from healthy whole grains.

Buying Guide for Dog Foods with Grains

When it comes to choosing the best dog food with grains, you will never get a straight answer as a hot debate surrounds the topic. Most of as dog parents tend to think that grains are harmful to dogs but study suggests that grains are healthful, especially to our dog’s heart health and more.

Although we want to feed our dogs the ancestral diet their descendants eat in the wilderness, domesticating these friendlies are used to eating things they did not before, grains included.

That being said, what we should keep in mind as dog owners when picking the best dog food with grains is the quality of grains, plus their carbs content. Ensure that the diet is high in protein content, moderate in fats, but low in fiber and carbs.

Check out below for the grains to include and those to avoid:

Dog Food Grains to Include

With the number of dog food brands on the market, offering dog food with grains, picking the best for your dog is an overwhelming task, and even more when grains are cluded. We highly recommend that you could begin with reding the ingredients list before making any purchase.

Whole grains are good and healthy for promoting your dog’s heart health and it is approved by vets, most dog parents, and dog food experts. So, if you are buying grain-inclusive dog food, look for those with grains like brown rice, oatmeal, oats, rice, wheat, barley, quinoa, and millet.

Dog Food Grains to Avoid

Typically, no grains are harmful to dogs whatsoever.

Dog food grains to avoid include anything labeled as refined varieties and grain by-products such as hulls from oats, rice, cottonseed, and soybean, or almond shells, soy & meal mill runs, wheat middling, grain fragments, and powdered cellulose.

While they may sound like grains, they are just waste debris and unfit for your dog.

When to Consider Dog Foods without Grains

Although non-grained dog foods are most dog parent’s option and preference despite the risks they are said to pose to our dog’s health, there are times when you must consider dog foods without grains. Here are the two major cases for feeding grain-free diets:

  • Gas & Digestion Issues

Some dogs are unable to digest grains properly even when they do not have allergies which results in stomach disorders and too much gas. In such a case, you must change your dog’s diet to grain-free, especially if he seems gassier than usual. See if there are changes.

  • Allergies

Although uncommon, some pooches will have grain allergens which mean that continuing to feed them dog food with grains will make their life a living hell, and yours too due to vet visits. As such, dogs with grain allergens should eat dog food without grains and protein (plant-based).

Where to Buy

Whether you are feeding your dog wet or dry dog food with grains, there are many places to shop including Amazon and Chewy which are my most preferred online platforms. You can also buy from the nearby, trusted pet store or Walmart, Petco, and more.

FAQs

Why are grains considered bad for dogs?

Some people tend to believe that grains cause allergic reactions and sensitivities in dogs. In my opinion, that conviction is brought by fear but I understand because most grains are GMOs. However, cases of dogs being sensitive to grains are less than 1%. The FDA advocates for grain-inclusive diets because they support heart health.

Can whole grains cause weight gain in my dog?

Yes, whole grains can cause weight gain your dog because as we can see, they are full of nutritional benefits. However, if you feed your dog the right amounts of food and calories, you will be able to maintain his healthy weight. It all comes to the feeding quantities.

How will I find out whether my dog is allergic to grains?

There is no direct answer on how to find if your dog is allergic to grain mainly because food allergies and sensitivities have common symptoms. While you can go for a dog food allergy test, using the elimination diet method is more reliable. However, symptoms of itchy skin, hot spots, hair loss, and constant scratch in places such as the ear and chewing or licking paws should raise alarms.

Is a grain-inclusive diet a healthy option for my dog?

Yes, grain-inclusive diets are a healthy option for your dog as research has found grains to support heart health which is why I would recommend it, I feed mine too. Furthermore, what would be better than approval or warning from the FDA?

How are whole grains better than processed grains for my dog’s food?

Whole grains are high in nutrients and fiber content and have a lower risk of heart disease, obesity, and support healthy digestion in dogs. Other nutrients packed in whole grains include high protein, antioxidants, and trace minerals like zinc, magnesium, and copper, as well as B vitamins. Processed grains (labeled as refined grains in dog foods) are toxic and have a higher risk of DCM.

Bottom Line

Dog food with grains is a healthy and nutritious diet for your canine friend(s) since it promotes heart health and is typically healthful. Despite the many controversies surrounding dog health and grains, you can see that the dog foods we reviewed above are full of health benefits.

And while feeding your dog grains is recommended, ensure you verify whether they are the healthful ones or those you should avoid. From dog foods with grain for pups, adults, seniors to weight maintenance, there are great formulas for all life stages, breeds, and sizes. Just choose wisely.
