We have been trying to come up with resources specifically targeted to provide support to potential dog parents looking to adopt a dog as a pet.

We utilized several tools including the API provided generously by Petfinder.com and have listed all the fog rescues in Alabama.

What is a dog rescue?

Dog rescue is typically a non-profit organization that takes in unwanted, abandoned, abused, or stray dogs and attempts to find forever homes for them.

Many are breed-specific rescues and will only take in one type of dog, while others are general rescues that will accept all types.

You can choose to get your dog from a breeder, pet store, or even the pound, but there are so many deserving dogs in rescues that need good homes.

How do they operate?

Most rescues are run by volunteers who donate their time and resources to help save as many dogs as possible.

The dogs typically live in foster homes until they are adopted.

This allows the rescue to get to know the dog and its temperament in a home environment so they can better match them with the right family.

How to adopt from a Rescue:

The adoption process from a rescue is usually much more involved than adopting from a shelter.

This is because they want to make sure their dogs are going to the best possible home and will often do a home visit and/or meet and greet before approving an adoption.

They will also require you to fill out an application and usually have a contract that you must sign.

Things to know about adopting from a dog rescue:

• Most rescues require a minimum donation for adoption, which typically goes towards vetting costs.
• All dogs from a rescue will be spayed/neutered and up to date on vaccinations.
• Many rescues also require that you sign a contract stating that you will not declaw the cat, or dock the dog’s tail.
• Rescues are a great option for those looking to add a furry family member, and there are so many in need of good homes!
